Last week I wrote about the big, exciting changes that facebook was making to their business fan pages. As I mentioned at the end of my article: As with all exciting upgrades, there is always a downside. In this case, it has to do with the disappearance of the default landing tab. You will no longer be able to create default landing tabs on your page.
The thing of it is though that this actually presents your restaurant with some interesting options that can draw fans in and make them more interactive with your facebook fan page, and therefore your brand. Here are a few things to keep in mind, as well as some interesting ways you can engage your fans, creatively, with the new changes.
1) Applications are still available on your fan page and your custom welcome tab is not gone
While it is true that you can’t direct people to a landing page on your fan page anymore, your landing page tab has not gone anywhere. It is still there.
In fact, you can actually now have up to 12 applications that you can showcase on your fan page. The top row of apps features 4. The others become visible when a fan clicks the upside down arrow directly to the right of the fourth app.
Now, photos, by default, is always the first app shown, so technically, you only have three applications that you can control in the top row.
Moving the apps is easy. first click the down arrow next to your top row of apps to display all of your apps. Next, click the pencil icon in the upper right corner of the app. Then select the app that you would like to swap positions with. Again, you cannot change the position of the Photos app.
2) Applications can now have custom artwork associated with them
Many, many of our restaurant clients have contacted us, saddened by the fact that the default landing tabs have disappeared. The new app buttons give restaurants an opportunity to be more creative though. The biggest benefit to restaurants is that you can change the photo that appears on the app.
For instance, check out what Chili’s has done. They have uploaded custom graphics for their ChiliHead Nation app, a link to their twitter account, and their New Locations, among others.
What does this mean for your restaurant? The sky is the limit. For instance, for all of our clients, we have set up an attractive, eye catching button that invites the fan to join our client’s DinerCentric Diner Loyalty Program. We also are able to program a custom menu app page that also features an eye catching image of one of the restaurants most popular or newest dishes. How could your restaurant use this sort of flexibility with your contests, promotions, events or videos?
Changing the app photo is easy: Simply display all of your apps with the down arrow button next to the top row of apps and click on the pencil icon. Scroll down to the Edit Setting selection and from there you can add a custom tab image.
The size you should design your custom tab image is 111 pixels by 74 pixels.
How are you going to use this creative way to display apps on your fan page to make your restaurant stand out? If you need tips, of have questions, please feel free to comment to below, as we are offering everyone “best practices advice”, to get their page super charged and ready for prime time.
